Sabarimala Sri Dharmasastha Temple opens some specific days only as give below dates in a year.Sabarimala is located at Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala.Sabarimala temple is one of the most popular temple people visit three to four million pilgrims each year.They wear black dress and rudraksha or tulasi beads mala in vratham.In general from then they are to refrain from non-vegetarian food of any kind alcohol, and tobacco, engaging in sex, using foul language, hair-cut, shaving and even trimming the nails. They are expected to bath twice in a day and visit the local temples regularly.They do not shave until the completion of the pilgrimage, and smear Vibhuti or sandal paste on their forehead.This is because Ayyappan is a Bramhachari.Females below 10 years and above 50 years are allowed to enter the temple other ages (like groups the women in the menstrual age group)are not allowed because Ayyappa swami is Bramhachari.

The pilgrimage begins in the month of November and ends in January.The devotee comes most in the day Mandala pooja and Makaravilakku are the two main events.The story belong Makaravilakku is Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana met Sabari, a grate devotee, at Sabarimala. Sabari offered the Lord Rama fruits after tasting them. But the Lord accepted them gladly and with whole heartedly.Then the Lord Rama saw a divine person doing tapasya. He asked Sabari who it was. Sabari said it was Shasta.Lord Rama walked towards him. Shasta stood up and welcomed the Prince of Ayodhya.The anniversary of this incident is celebrated on Makara Vilakku day. It is believed that on Makara Vilakku day, Lord Dharmashasta stops his tapasya to bless his devotees. This day is also called Makara Shankranthi.

Harivarasanam is recited before closing the temple door every night. The Harivarasanam song, which is sung at Sabarimala is a Urakkupattu is composed by Sri Kambangudi Kulathur Srinivasa Iyer. It is said that Srinivasa Iyer used to recite the composition, after the Athazha Puja, standing in front of the shrine of Ayyappa in the main temple. With the efforts of Swami Vimochanananda, it came to be accepted as the lullaby by the Tantri and Melshanthi.

Instructions:

  • Vehicles operated by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, Travancore Devaswom Board and Private parties are available to Pamba.
  • Dolly service is available from Pamba to Sannidhanam for those who are unable to walk the heights.
  • There are Cardiology centres at Appachimedu (Phone No. 04735-202050) and Neelimala (Phone No. 04735-203384).
  • Stretcher service is available at Appachimedu (Phone No. 04735-203350)
  • Cigeratte and Beedi smoking, Alcholic drinks and plastic goods are prohibited at Pamba and Sabarimala.
  • As Sabarimala Ayyappa is 'Nithya Brahmachari' (celibate)women between the 10-50 age group are not allowed to enter Sabarimala. Such women who try to enter Sabarimala will be prevented by authorities.
  • Only pilgrims who have obsered Vrutham alone are allowed entry through the holly Pathinettampadi. They have to carry Irumudikettu (Pallikettu)also.
  • Placing Viri and halting in the upper Thirumuttam is not allowed during festival seasons.
  • Queue system have to be followed for Darsan, Abhishekam and at the Prasadam counters.
  • Purchase tickets for Vazhipadus from the respective ticket counters.
